Productivity Tips for Students

As a university student, you may catch yourself feeling that there aren't enough hours in a day to get homework and studying done. Once you have prioritized what to do for the day, how can you make the most out of your time? Every semester brings different courses and overtime, I have learned how to adapt to the different types of work and amount of work required in my classes. Let's dive into my tips to you on how to be productive!

Tip #1 - Clutter-free Space

Before I start homework or studying, I like to only have around me what I need to complete my current task. Whenever I plan to study, you can only find my study sheets, a notebook, and a pen on my desk. Whenever I plan to do homework, you can only find the materials needed for me to complete an assignment, discussion, or chapter notes on my desk. When I only have the materials with me to complete a current task, it helps me focus only on what I am doing, instead of the other homework I need to complete.

Tip #2 - No Screens

Not having my phone or laptop in the same room where I am studying supports my productivity. If I need to complete an assignment online or type, I will use my laptop, but that's the only "exception". If you have an iPad or any other devices I'd suggest putting that away as well. In my opinion, if you can reach for your phone or see notifications pop-up on a screen, it can be extremely distracting when doing homework.

Tip #3 - Pick Your Environment Wisely

Not everyone can focus in the same environment. Some people can be at Starbucks or Tim Hortons and focus for hours on end, whereas some people thrive in the library and other quiet spaces. Whichever environment supports your productivity, stick with it! In addition, if you can only get assignments or reading done in silent to slightly noisy spaces, don't settle for noisy surroundings. It may take you longer to find a place to "grind" but you'll thank yourself later. I like to do homework in the University of the Fraser Valley's library, second floor next to the library, the Campus Restaurant, and at home. I'm the type of student that can only thrive in silent or slightly noisy spaces.

Tip #4 - Create a Stress-free Space

Whenever I am about to start homework, I know that I'll be working for at least two hours. With that comes the need to have things at hand and be prepared to do homework continuously. On campus, I like to:

✓ Bring a filled-up water bottle

✓ Bring a granola bar

✓ Use the washroom beforehand

✓ Put my phone on silent & tucked away in my backpack
