Is A Degree Worth it?

Hello and welcome back to my blog! As you can probably tell by the title, this blog post will be about whether or not spending 4-5 years and thousands of dollars for a degree is worth it. As a disclaimer, most of what I say is based on my opinion... not facts! I hope you enjoy reading and thanks for visiting my blog!

Everyone is brought up in different families, so for some... college may not be an option, but for others... college could be the only way to go. My parents never gave me a talk about why I need to go to college, I just knew I wanted to go. It seems like more and more careers require you to have a degree, masters, or at least a specialized diploma. In my opinion, the demand of jobs to have some sort of post-secondary education requirement will keep growing. I had many talks with my parents of university and where I'd want to go and what I wanted to study, so me accepting Thompson Rivers University's offer and deciding to there, didn't surprise them. I even toured a few universities with my parents, because I needed all the support I could get for making such a big choice in my life.
Not everyone will look at college and university the way I did in high school. I loved going on university's websites and browsing through their programs, campus life, residence life, and everything in between. I did hours of research on universities in BC of course, but even Alberta and Ontario. I didn't want to limit myself on what program I could be in and where I could study. For those of you who don't know me well, I was set on studying Journalism for years, but after taking the Intro to Marketing course at my school, I knew marketing was for me. All the research I did, made me excited to start a new chapter in my life and I knew I heading in the right direction after I graduated high school.
What I've learnt towards the end of my second year of university is that a degree is important, not just because you learn so much in the classroom and have a degree with you for your whole life... but it can open the doors to valuable work experience that is almost just as important as getting a degree. Since I am pursuing a career in marketing, a degree itself... isn't going to cut it. I've gained so much hands on work experience in producing marketing materials that I have yet to experience in my classes. I'm assuming that I will be learning more in marketing in my last two years, but having the hands on experience at a company and organization is very beneficial.
There are a lot of benefits in working towards a degree. To me, the 4-5 years of schooling and debt (as little or big as it may be) is worth it, because it helps you realize what you want to do in life as a career, make you realize what your interests are, meet new and amazing people, and it gives you the credentials you'll need for life. The only thing I would personally suggest if you decide to pursue a degree, is to take a degree that you know will allow you to make enough money at the end/ give you a reasonable amount of career opportunities and be interesting and fun to take!
