High School Vs. University In My Perspective

Hello and welcome back to my blog! If you are new to my blog, my name is Kim and I am a student at Thompson Rivers University working towards a degree in communications and public relations! My blog is an online platform I use to create written and video content related to my experiences, advice to students, and university. I wanted to think back to my high school years and compare them to the two years I have had at university. I hope you enjoy reading and thanks for visiting my blog!

There are three words I use to show the difference between high school and university. Each will be mentioned and explained through my personal experiences. The first is diversity. There is diversity in not only the students, but the courses, clubs, and experiences you can have. I love how you don't see the same people at school every day for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, because with being around the same hundreds of people comes... cliques, bullying, loneliness, and/or just overall not a good experience. At university, I pass new faces every day and have the opportunity to learn more about someone and potentially become friends. The energy is more accepting and, in my case, I feel more comfortable at school knowing that I can be 100% myself and not be judged. I realize that in high school me, along with everyone, was younger and well... not in the stage of life to understand how you can be yourself and enjoy your life the way you want to. That being said, having an uncomfortable high school experience could have been because everyone around you was young, still learning, and immature, who knows! However for the most part, students at university are mature, accepting, and polite to one another, which definitely contributes to an enjoyable school experience.

The next is growth. When I think about my years in high school and compare it to how I am like today, it's drastically different! As a female teenager, I could not stand the thought of me leaving my house and going to school without makeup, or even my hair straightened. Now... I have days where I put little-to-no make up and leave my natural hair... natural, and I love it. I've learnt to embrace my natural hair and other aspects about myself that I use to try to hide. Another aspect of my life that I have seen growth in is my ability to write personal things like this and post it for anyone and everyone to see. When I started this blog I didn't want a lot of people to read what I was writing or know that I had a blog. Now I want others to not only see my posts, but read them, because almost 100% of the time I incorporate advice for students just like you, to make my blog a resource for educational information. I've grown more confident in my blog and exposing myself like this to the world, and that comes with the growth I've been able to develop since starting university.

The last is forward-thinking. When I was in high school, it felt like school was my whole life and how my life would always be similar to it. I didn't realize until the end of grade 12 that high school is just 4 years of your life and life afterwards is so different, and for most people... a lot better! Being where I am today, I am always thinking about the future (forward-thinking), whether it is what courses I want to take and complete next semester or what jobs I want and where I want to live. Being in university is comfortable right now because I know my school campus well and know that I'll be in Kamloops for two more years. However once I graduate, as cliche as it sounds, the world will be my oyster. I can strive to be a brand manager at a big company in ten years time, or imagine myself living in a big city and enjoying new experiences day by day. Forward-thinking is something I didn't experience a lot in high school, but what I am also implementing in my life in university.
