Hello and welcome back to my blog! On Thursday, February 22nd I got the chance to attend the MIX Conference presented by Telus in Vancouver. This was the first conference I've ever been to, and did not know what to expect. I decided to just post this written blog post this week, so I hope you enjoy reading how the marketing conference was like through my eyes and stay tuned next Monday for another video for Marketing Mondays!

The title of the conference was "The Marketing Innovation Experience" which you will notice in one of the photos that is included in this article. It was a three hour conference, which started with complimentary drinks and food along with networking, preceded to listening to the discussions of a panel of professionals, and ended with a keynote speaker discussing augmented reality and it's impact in today's marketing and future marketing.

I entered the Telus building and saw a sign of the event with a few volunteers next to it. I approached them and was directed to the elevators. I took the elevators to the top floor and was lead to the registration table and coat check area. I received a lanyard that said my name "Kimberly Zavera" and "TRU Kamloops". I put that around my neck and left my jacket in the coat check area. I brought with me a small notebook, pen, and information I gathered of the sponsors that were going to be at the event. I wanted to familiarize myself with who was going to be there. I was expecting to see a mix of marketing professionals and university students, but was surprised to see that I was probably the only student there! I was surrounded by such successful individuals in the field and felt that I was where I'd want to be in 5-10 years from now. I looked at demos that the sponsors provided and was amazed by how unique and advanced the technology was.

Myself, along with around one to two hundred individuals sat down to listen to a presentation of panelists discussing marketing topics such as augmented reality, virtual reality, and immersive marketing. The panel consisted of Sharad Khare (digital journalist), Madeline Ell (senior producer at Telus), Diana Walter (group director - digital media), Lloyd Berry (head of partnerships at Advrtas), and Mark Jones (a media supervisor). The panel discussed the following questions:

- What prompted you to take a leap into immersive marketing?

- How to you measure ROI on your campaigns?

- What level of investment is required?

- How can brands add immersive marketing to their mix? *4 P's: Product, Price, Place, Promotion

- Is immersive marketing a trend, or here to stay?

It was interesting to listen to these experienced and highly knowledgable people discuss what augmented reality and virtual reality is, immersive marketing pros and cons, where the future of marketing is going. etc. After this one hour panelist discussion, Adam Bauer (keynote speaker) was up next. Adam has 10+ years of experience in advertising and digital marketing and is the vice president of strategic partnerships at Shazam. Shazam is a British app development company that created an app that can identify music, movies, advertising, and so on based on a short sample played using a device. Adam discussed augmented reality which is using digital information with a person's real-time environment, so it uses the existing environment you are in and overlays new information on top of it. He also mentioned virtual reality which is different in that it creates an artificial environment. He discussed how to make marketing materials such as products, packaging, advertising, and events turn to life through 3D animations, product visualizations, 360-degree videos, and so on.

I didn't know any of this existed so it was such an interesting presentation to listen to and learn from. After leaving the conference, I hope to see myself as a marketing professional attending similiar conferences and being a part of what marketing is going to become.

I hope you enjoyed reading about my experience at this conference. If you have any questions or would like to contact me, please do at kimzavera28@gmail.com or my Facebook!
