Importance of Work Experience

Hello and welcome back to my blog. As my second year will be coming to an end in a few months, it’s made me realize that I am almost finished half of my degree program. Today’s post will be something that I believe is one of the most important things to do before graduating university, which is gaining work experience.

There are thousands of graduates from hundreds of colleges and universities across the country. The one thing that these graduates have in common are either diplomas or degrees, but what is debatable is whether they have work experience. If you can have at least a year of work experience before you graduate university, it can act as a big asset for career-related interviews, because it could be the reason that you get the job over someone else. The four reasons I am going to discuss as to why having work experience is important is: 1) helps you work towards your career, 2) allows you to network, 3) shows that you have knowledge, and 4) displays passions.

During college, it is normal to change programs, majors, and even decisions of what career you want to have. However, once you have a grasp of what field you’d want to work in, it is important to start obtaining work experience in that field as soon as possible. This can be done through a co-op program, working for the school, volunteering, or using the connections you have to gain that experience. Having work experience that is related to your future career, will give you an edge on other graduates who have not worked in a career-related workplace. It will make you look desirable to employers, because you will have skills that the company won’t have to teach you. Having it shows willingness to work and the potential to work well in a similar workplace.

One of the more obvious benefits that work experience has, in my opinion, is that it can lead to a future career in that company that you volunteered or worked for during your college years. It is a helpful way to build contacts with businesses in the city, or nearby cities. If you are planning to start your career across the country, or a different country it will be more difficult, but not impossible. The more you build your presence through online sites, go to events related to your career, and gain work experience, the easier it will be to land a job far away from home. If you gain work experience in a company, and do so successfully, you could get great recommendations from your company to other companies, which definitely would help.

When applying for job positions, work experience is important because it shows the company that you have the knowledge that comes only from the experience of working in a related job environment. It shows that you have developed skills to work efficiently in the workplace. In my case, work experience would be working in a communications or marketing position, so that would show that I have teamwork, communication, and writing skills. Work experience will show the employer that you, as a recent graduate, have learned to work independently in a fast paced environment.

Lastly, work experience shows that you have passion and drive in the field you want to start a career in. It shows that you are willing to become knowledgable on your own, and develop skills that will be helpful for you in the future to be successful. It shows motivation because you have contacted businesses to work for them, and gone through the process of being interviewed.
