Typical Week at School

Hello, and welcome back to my blog!

I am about one month into the second semester, and wanted to talk about my typical school week at TRU. If you are in your last year of high school or even in university, and may be interested in taking the college career path of communications, public relations or marketing then this can be beneficial to you.

I am in the bachelor of arts, major in communications program, in the public relations stream. My program requires me to take communications, journalism, event, and marketing courses. This semester I am enrolled in five courses, plus a cooperative education course.

On Monday's I start the day off early with my 8:30am human resources management class. So far I've been covering topics about the history of HRM, Charter of Rights and Freedoms, discrimination, harassment, and aspects in the work place. The class will be beneficial to me, because I am learning my rights and prohibited grounds in the workplace that I should be aware of when I start my career. Having a class at 8:30am does sound awful to some people, but I will say that the good side of this is that you're finished class early and have the rest of the day to do what you need/want to. In my case, I have a class at 11:30am, which is sports event marketing! This is the class I was most excited to start in the beginning of the semester. In this class we talk about what's happening recently in sports, the sociology of sports, and the importance of advertising and sponsorships. After that class I have a large break, in which I either stay on campus to do homework (shown in the photo above) or go home to relax. Whatever I decide to do, I head to my professional, technical, and business writing class right before 4:00pm. In this class, we go over the proper structures and writing of emails, essays, and documents that we would be writing to businesses.

It's now Tuesday, and I have a more relaxed school day. I start off the day by going to my introduction to fiction class at 11:30am. This is by far my most boring class, because we talk about short stories and analyze them. It's a slow pace class and is a requirement for my program, so that's the reason I am taking in. I can tell it's interesting for some students in my class, however everyone is different. After this class, I have a hour and a half break until my next class, in which I stay on campus and do homework and eat lunch. When 2:30pm comes along, I am in my staging special events class. This is a three hour class in which we learn about all aspects that are important in staging all different types of events, from concerts to conferences. What makes this class interesting, is that there is hands on experience involved, in which we contribute to an actual event on campus.

Wednesday's are exactly like Monday's, which I enjoy because the two sessions I have of the three classes are close together, so I still remember the information taught from the last class!

I barely consider Thursday's to be a school day, because I only have co-op class! This class is from 1:00-2:15pm, and is a class in which I get to learn about the skills and knowledge needed for certain career paths, learn more about the types of careers I would want, figure out my skills and what I should develop, etc. After this class I either stay on campus to do some homework, or head home to do homework. Thursday's are very flexible days for me, which I really enjoy.

It's now Friday, and this is a day when I try to get a lot of homework/ studying done before the weekend. I have my introduction to english class at 11:30am, however most of the time I go on campus around 8:30am to get some homework done before class. It's a great feeling to be productive in the morning, go to class, and have the rest of the day to do whatever you want!

That concludes the typical school week that I have this semester! As I am approaching the half way point of my degree, I am starting to try to absorb information and see when the information I am taught can be applied to the career I want, because before I know it I'll be earning my degree and ready to start my career.
