How I Figured Out What To Study

If anyone tells you that you’ll change programs or your major in university, believe them. It may sound like a bad thing at first, but it’s actually pretty exciting. I am going to touch on my experience of finding the best program for me, and also give you tips on how to figure out what you want to study!

Since middle school I have been interested in journalism and could really see myself doing that as a career when I got older. High school came, and I was still set on it. In grade 12, I applied to universities that had either journalism degrees or communications degrees. I decided to go to Thompson Rivers University and study in their Bachelor of Journalism program. A couple months into the program I decided that I wanted to study something related to business communications, because journalism didn’t feel like the right fit.

I changed to the closest thing that TRU had to that, which was Bachelor of Arts and I followed the public relations stream of the communications major. I thought it was the best choice for me at the time, however after taking my Intro to Marketing class I fell in love with it and wanted to pursue a career in it. And as of today, I still do.

I changed to the business program and last semester I took math, economics and accounting courses. After a lot of stress, hard work, but no results, I knew that the Bachelor of Arts, Major in Communications and Public Relations was the best program for me, that highlighted my strengths and would be enjoyable. Therefore, I switched back to it!

I did a total of three program changes until I knew what was the best for me. Sometimes it takes a little trial and error to figure out what fits you the best. I did research on the communications and marketing related college and university programs in BC and found lots of reasons as to why I wouldn’t want to study at those schools. I realized that the exact program I am in at this school is the best for me. I enjoy most aspects of school, besides waking up early and studying for finals, so knowing that I am in the right program makes it more exciting for me.

As you can probably tell, my college path and even my career path, has changed… multiple times. Some people will start and finish in the same program, and others won’t. I would recommend taking courses in your first year that sound interesting, but you aren’t sure you’ll like. This will allow you to possibly spark a new interest or explore new career paths. What I find helpful is to look at what your favourite subjects are in school right now and what you like to do in your spare time. There are a variety of careers you can have, so doing research and being aware of what you like and what you're good at can help! If you do decide to change majors or programs, it’s not a bad thing! It just means that you’re closer to where you’re suppose to be.
