Making the transition from middle school to high school can be challenging but I've come up with some tips to help you succeed and make it a little less confusing. These tips can also apply to students already in high school, so be sure to keep reading!
1) Stay organized.
Without being organized you can easily forget what homework you had, what test you have coming up, and where all of your textbook and supplies are. Having a clean locker will make it easier to find textbooks and binders when you need them and any other extra school supplies. Also keep in mind that if you do lose a textbook you will need to pay for it... which is an even bigger reason to stay organized. I know that some students had one big binder for all of their classes, however I had a separate binder for each of my classes. I suggest to do whatever works for you... and stick with it.
2) Be open to meeting new people.
You may know some people from middle school, but you will definitely be around others in high school that you've never met before, and because of that you should be open to talking to anyone especially in your first year. I say this because everyone is in the "same boat" as you and wants to make new friends and talk to different people so if you see someone in your class that you think could be your friend... get to know them! If someone starts talking to you, don't be quick to judge... they could end up being one of your closest friends! Everyone doesn't know what to expect in their first year of high school so be open minded and try to enjoy yourself.
3) Have a good relationship with your teachers.
I know that when I showed respect towards my teachers and showed that I cared about the class... my relationships with each of them was so much better. I always felt good knowing that my teachers thought of me as a hard working student because it showed them that I was a respectful student and had the intentions to do well in school. So much happens during high school that you can forget that you're there to learn. You should know that it may seem like some of your teachers are punishing you, but they will always have good intentions behind everything they do. If that doesn't make you want to have a positive relationship with your teachers... then think about what your teachers would be willing to do to bump up your grade if they know how hard you work in class. In my case, some of my teachers actually rounded up my grades because they knew how hard I worked and how dedicated I was. Don't expect every teacher to do that... but there are teachers that will... so be grateful when they do bump up your letter grade or percentage!
4) Try new things.
This is great time to see what kind of clubs and sports teams your school has to offer. You may discover a new talent or interest that you would have never known about before. I regret not joining the girls soccer team and newspaper club at the start of grade nine because I knew I would have loved it. When I joined the soccer team in grade ten and the newspaper club in grade twelve I felt to much closer with the school... because I was getting involved. There will probably be a club fair or sports tryouts on the school announcements or flyers so be sure to check them out if you think you would be even a little bit interested... because why not!
5) Be yourself.
You have probably heard this before but actually doing it... can be harder than you think. It's okay if you feel afraid of judgement because everyone will at some point. I personally did, I thought so much about what others would think about me if I said this, or participated in this, or wore this. When really I shouldn't have cared as much as I did. It may be hard to think this now, but everyone in school is equal, this means that everyone is treated the same and given the same amount of opportunities. It may seem that some people are "better" than you... but in all honesty those people aren't from royalty or just born more special than you... they are regular people... like you!
High school will seem scary at first, but just know that all of the new students are in the same situation as you. To make the transition a little less confusing... stay organized, don't forget that you're there to learn, don't be afraid to talk to someone new, try things that you think you would enjoy, and be yourself!
