Tips When Registering For Classes

Registering for university courses can be difficult... especially if you are an incoming freshmen. I will start off by saying that high school classes compared to college and university classes are completely different. In high school you only had to take four classes (in my case) which could very well be all easy electives. In university, no matter what classes you are taking it will require you to devote time for studying... which basically means that there are no easy classes. I have come up with some tips to consider before registering, which I personally have done. Firstly, meet with your faculty advisor. Considering that my university is a four hour drive from my home made it difficult to visit whenever I had questions. Therefore, I emailed my department chair professor whenever I needed help. I did however get the chance to drive all the way there to meet with my department chair professor which made the whole registration process a lot easier. I suggest that if your university or college is close to home... definitely take the time to schedule a meeting with your advisor. Secondly, make sure to take the required courses first before selecting elective courses. The required courses are needed to be able to earn your diploma or degree down the line. Everyones situation will be different, however in my case I only have two required classes in my first year, so that gave me the opportunity to choose many electives I am interested in but also really branch out what I am learning. I would also suggest to take an english or writing class. Whatever program you are in, having basic english and writing skills will always be needed in any career. When I was registering for classes I struggled with picking the right teacher for each of my classes. I came across ratemyprofessors.com which gave me the ability to read reviews online of the professors in my school. After reading the reviews, it was clear which professors I should avoid and which will make my learning experience better. However, keep in mind that the reviews are based solely on students opinions... so everyones can be unique and different. Lastly, when putting your course schedule together, make sure that you schedule your classes which will give you the ability to study efficiently, as well as have the time to have fun and enjoy yourself. Personally, I reviewed my course schedule after registering and analyzed it quite a bit. I made a schedule based on my classes each day from Monday to Friday which included the times of my classes, meals, studying, laundry, and going to the gym. Having all of this completed with my courses made me see if it would be better for me to have a certain class at a different time or not. To recap, meet with a faculty advisor so that every question you have can be answered, take required classes first before anything, take an english or writing class, check out ratemyprofessors.com to have an idea of which professors would be the best for you, and lastly make sure your schedule is manageable. In other words... make sure that you will have time to study efficiently and for some fun!
