What I Wish I Knew Before High School

Still remembering my very first day of high school when I was lost and showed up just on time for class... makes it unbelievable knowing that my whole high school experience has finished. Over the four years I definitely learned a lot that would have helped me out from the start. The biggest thing I wish I knew was... to be myself. As simple as it sounds, it took a while for me to really put it into action. High school is full of pressure... pressure to be liked, accepted, worthy, etc. It almost makes you put aside who you are... and makes you focus on who you want others to see you as. If I knew this before starting high school I would have been so much more content with myself... knowing that I can wear what I liked without worrying about what others may think, I can put as little or much make up as I want, and I can say and do what I want without the fear of judgement from others. All of these thoughts at the beginning of freshmen year are completely normal, but it's important to remember that where ever you are... you should be able to be one hundred percent yourself and not be afraid of it. Secondly, I wish I knew that if you're not happy you have the power to change that! Personally, during sophomore and junior year of high school I felt like I only had a handful of friends from my large group of friends that I truly had a close relationship with and really felt that we "got each other". Those years were a bit rocky but I always thought to myself that I can make the most at of my time with this group of friends... but the truth is that you can't change people. High school definitely has its cliques, so it may seem impossible to leave a group of people and find people that really understand you and value what you have to say. However, I'm saying now that no matter what grade you are in (even in senior year) you can find people that will make your high school experience so much better! Personally I still have a couple friends from the early days of high school but my core group of friends are friends I made in my last year of school. The timing could have been better but at least I had the opportunity to become friends with them. It made my high school experience end in such a positive way. To recap, don't be afraid of the judgement in high school, if you want to wear something... wear it! If you want to play a sport... try it out! If you want to become friends with someone... go say hi! It could potentially lead to a great friendship. Never be afraid to express yourself, your personality, and your interests... because that's what makes you... you.
