Seeing that September is only a month away... means that back to school time is just around the corner. For students in high school this means back to school supplies shopping and the excitement of back to school clothes shopping. However for seniors out there this upcoming school season is so much more than that. Not only are you about to start a new year of high school but... your last. I'm not going to lie... the first semester is hectic! This is mainly due to the fact that this is the period in which you will be applying for universities and colleges. I am no expert, but I spent months preparing for the time when I would need to apply, so if I can help anyone out there with this process... I will definitely try! A factor that contributes the most to this process is the cost. Knowing that you cannot financially afford to go to a university means that you probably shouldn't be applying to it. If you're prepared to handle the responsibility of paying back student loans then that's a completely different story! For myself, I thought about how I want to start my life after university, and I knew I didn't want to deal with student debt... but instead extra cash in my pocket to get my career and new life to a great start. Also keep in mind that when applying to universities there is a fee for submitting an application, and over time all the fees for your applications can add up to be pretty pricey. Secondly, think about if you could see yourself going to that university or college. The best way to do this is not base your opinion on the schools website but to tour the school. Touring the school when there are students there will show you the atmosphere of the place. If you can picture yourself going to classes there, hanging out with friends, and getting involved there then definitely consider applying to that school! After all you are the one who will be going there regardless of the opinions from others. Also keep in mind the opportunities available to you in the university or college. Can you study abroad? Can you do co-op? Does the school have connections to get you an internship in your field of study? Lastly, when applying for a school don't just see if it has the one program you are interested in. It is common for many students to change their mind and decide to take a different career path. Take a look at all the programs and see which ones you may be interested in. To recap, consider the cost, how you would feel attending the school for two to four years, the opportunities the school has to offer, and the varies programs you can take. Doing your research ahead of time will make the process so much less stressful when you have to apply and down the line when you start university or college!
